The EmoGenius program was created by a Portuguese multidisciplinary team (paediatricians and psychologists) with the purpose of helping children and parents/caregivers to get to know their emotions and body better, realising their interconnection. In summary, there is a special focus on mind-body, health promotion and mindfulness.
The program covers preschool children, educators, the educational community and the family. Its main goals are the identification, expression and the regulation of emotions. Four stories are explored throughout 17 sessions dealing with basic emotions – anger, fear, sadness and happiness – based on group discussion, role-playing, use of puppets, moments of mindfulness, relaxation and songs. In addition, weekly challenges for parents and educators are included.
These sessions are supposed to be implemented by preschool teachers, once a week, for 45 minutes. Although there are structured sessions, the aim of EmoGenius program is not to be restricted at one session per week. As teachers understand the goal of each individual session, they can continue to work on them throughout the week, using daily routine interactions. The program also engages parents, motivating them to participate in the weekly challenge proposals.
